Introduction

Medical dramas have fascinated America since the days of ER. The shows are meant to get your adrenaline pumping and meant to make you feel like you are in the same room as a coding patient. Many Americans that watch these shows feel like they could even become doctors after watching fifteen seasons of Grey's Anatomy religiously. Several actual doctors find that these medical shows are painting the whole picture incorrectly. That is why I wanted to create a blog that talks about the errors that these shows have during their episodes. All shows have a medical consultant that tells them if they are too inaccurate. Many real doctors believe that these professionals on set have even practiced medicine. There's a huge spectrum of inaccuracies that I will mention in this blog. I am planning to watch The Good Doctor, Grey's Anatomy, and Chicago Med for three weeks and write reviews based off my rubric. At the end of the three weeks, I will give a final ranking of which show is the most medically accurate and which is the least medically accurate.

Rubric

Surgery Preparations

  • Explanation of case to patient and between doctors
  • Plan of action is normal, not too outlandish (for dramatic effect)
  • Tests taken for diagnosis are normal and the language for ordering the tests are accurate (not just run some tests and not every test that exists in all cases)
  • Doctors are washing their hands properly and scrubbing in correctly (based on whatever is show - full process not shown)

Actual Surgery

  • Surgeons are taking the right steps for the specific surgery
  • If the patient crashes, they are using proper revival methods (not just shocking them in some cases)
  • Anatomy (that is shown) is correct
  • Correct OR set up (attendings are    teaching, proper tools, nurses present, and anesthesiologist)

Validity of Surgical Case

  • Can I find the case that is shown on the show - if so how was it changed in order to be more dramatic for TV
  • Correctly diagnosed
  • Proper testing is done to get to the diagnosis (not just coming up with it by themselves)

Medical Terms Used

  • Are the words they are using in the correct context? (not just throwing around big words to make the viewer believe that the doctor knows what they are doing)

Large Differences

  • Every show is different in the portrayal of the hospital and those who are working in it. Therefore, If I notice any major differences between shows/reality I want to make sure I mention them.
